Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
As we mentioned above, there’s a common misconception that regular dental checkups and cleanings aren’t important if you take good care of your smile at home. Even if that’s the case, it’s possible for tooth decay, gum disease, and even oral cancer to develop under the radar. Plus, your toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash can leave behind plaque and tartar, which increases your risk of several common oral health problems. To put it simply, your biannual visits play a crucial role in both preventing and catching dental issues.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
Your dental checkup will be with our dedicated dentist in West Jordan, Dr. Osterhoudt. After catching up with you (or getting to know you, if this is your first visit), he will ask you a few questions about your oral health and review your latest X-rays. Then, he will complete a visual exam. In the process, he will take a look at each tooth, your gums, your tongue, the floor of your mouth, and any existing dental work you have. Then, he will share his findings with you and discuss the necessary next steps (if there are any).
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
Your dental cleaning will be with one of our gentle, compassionate, and experienced dental hygienists. After taking any necessary X-rays, they will begin the process of removing built-up plaque and tartar. This typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes, but it may take longer if it has been some time since your last visit. When they are done, they will floss, polish, and rinse your teeth, leaving your smile looking vibrant and feeling fresh.
If it has been more than six months since your last checkup, don’t hesitate to take the next step: schedule an appointment at our office. We look forward to taking care of you and your smile!
