Woman holding clear aligners up in heart shape

One of the biggest perks of clear aligner treatment is being able to watch your smile gradually transform. But what happens when your teeth don’t seem to be moving according to plan? If your SureSmile aligners aren’t fitting the way they should or a tooth doesn’t appear to be following its expected position, you may wonder whether something has gone wrong.

The good news is that tracking issues don’t necessarily mean your treatment has failed. There are several reasons your teeth may not be moving as expected, and your orthodontic provider can help get your treatment back on track.

What Does It Mean When Teeth Aren’t Tracking?

Clear aligners are designed to gradually guide your teeth into predetermined positions. Each aligner is shaped slightly differently to encourage specific movements throughout your treatment.

When an aligner isn’t fitting snugly against your teeth or there is a noticeable gap between the aligner and a tooth, the tooth may not be tracking as planned. Even a small difference can affect how well an aligner applies the intended pressure.

If you notice that an aligner doesn’t seem to fit correctly, don’t simply move on to the next one. Doing so could make it more difficult for your teeth to follow the treatment plan.

Why Aren’t My Teeth Moving?

One of the most common reasons for a tracking issue is not wearing your aligners as directed. Clear aligners need to be worn consistently for the recommended amount of time each day. Removing them too frequently or leaving them out for extended periods can interfere with your treatment timeline.

Your aligners also need to be seated properly. If you aren’t fully inserting an aligner, it may not apply pressure where it is supposed to. Your provider may recommend using an aligner seating aid to help ensure a proper fit.

Some teeth are also simply more difficult to move than others. The shape and position of a tooth, the type of movement required, and individual differences in how teeth respond to orthodontic forces can all affect treatment progress.

What Should I Do if My SureSmile Treatment Is Off Track?

First, don’t panic. Continue following your provider’s instructions and contact their office if you notice a persistent fit issue. Your provider can examine your teeth and aligners to determine why your treatment isn’t progressing as expected.

Depending on the situation, you may need to spend additional time wearing a particular aligner, use a different aligner, or have your treatment plan adjusted. Your provider may also recommend refinements to help achieve your planned results.

Most importantly, don’t try to speed up treatment by skipping aligners or changing your schedule on your own. Your teeth need time to move safely and predictably.

Stay Consistent With Your Aligner Plan

Wearing your SureSmile aligners as instructed and attending your scheduled appointments can help keep your treatment progressing according to plan. If something doesn’t look or feel right, bringing it to your orthodontic provider’s attention early can make it easier to address.

A small tracking issue doesn’t have to derail your entire smile journey. With the right adjustments and a little patience, you can keep working toward your treatment goals.
