Since SureSmile uses removable trays, you may assume it shouldn’t affect your oral care. You can just clean your smile as you normally would during the orthodontic process. However, you’d be wrong to think that way; a good patient will floss with SureSmile correctly to get solid treatment results. Your West Jordan dentist can even prove those facts with evidence. To that end, here’s a primer on why to floss with SureSmile and how to go about doing so.

Why Floss with SureSmile?

SureSmile doesn’t interfere with oral care, but it should still impact how you clean your teeth and gums. An example would be how treatment makes flossing more crucial than ever.

Remember, SureSmile requires you to wear “aligners” for roughly 22 hours a day. The trays have plenty of chances to trap food debris on your teeth, keeping such “leftovers” in place. Such trapping would then put you at greater risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. If such problems occurred during your treatment, the alignment process would be delayed.

Regular flossing is the solution to the “trapped leftovers” dilemma. If you stick to the habit at least once a day, dental floss will remove bacteria and plaque from between your teeth. You’ll then face a lower risk of harmful oral conditions, raising your odds of a smoother SureSmile treatment.

How Should You Floss with SureSmile?

Anytime you floss with SureSmile, adhere to the following steps:

Step 1: Remove Your Aligners

You can’t floss between your teeth if your aligners are in the way. So, start things off by removing your trays and soaking them in a cleansing solution. This step ensures your trays will be clean and plaque-free when you put them back on.

Step 2: Brush & Rinse Slowly

A flossing habit is most effective as part of a fuller oral hygiene routine. Therefore, please brush your teeth and rinse with mouthwash before starting. These measures remove plaque that floss alone couldn’t.

Step 3: Floss Your Teeth Carefully

Use the measures below when actually flossing:

  • While leaving a few inches to work between your teeth, wrap the ends of the floss around your fingers.
  • Glide your floss between your teeth and towards the gum line.
  • Move the floss with an up-down motion after working the string between your teeth into a “C” shape.
  • Repeat the three prior actions until you’ve cleaned all the spaces between your teeth.

Learning to floss with Suresmile isn’t a hard task, so please don’t neglect it. Use the steps above to ensure your smile stays healthy during the alignment.
