When it comes to replacing missing teeth, no one does it better than dental implants. They restore the entire structure, from the root up. This gives you a stable bite that feels just like normal while being comfortable. With high-quality materials, they even look entirely natural, but does this mean they can get stained like them? To learn more about keeping your full smile bright, here’s what you should know.

Will My Dental Implant Stain Like Natural Teeth?

A dental implant is made of three parts: the post that’s fused in your jawbone, an abutment that acts as a connector piece, and the restoration that’s above your gumline. The latter is generally what patients worry about being discolored, as it’s the visible portion.

Regardless of whether you have a crown, bridge, or denture in place, they are crafted with your smile in mind. Using materials like porcelain or ceramic, they can look lifelike and blend in seamlessly. Better yet, they are nonporous and coated with a protective glaze, making them more stain-resistant than natural teeth.

That being said, this doesn’t mean your restoration is immune to discoloration. The surface can become rough as it gets older. Poor oral hygiene, abrasive toothpaste, acidic foods, and biting on hard objects can cause this to happen. You may notice your implant has a tint to it or looks dull over time.

What Can I Do to Keep My Dental Implant Stain-Free?

The good news is that you can do your part in preventing stains from happening in your rebuilt smile. Here are some simple tips that you can follow:

  • Brush twice and floss once every day to remove harmful plaque and bacteria. They can increase your risk of discoloration as they can hold onto pigments.
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste. Find a product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance to ensure it’s safe for your smile. You can also talk to your dentist if you have trouble.
  • Stop using tobacco. This habit can lead to stains and even implant failure if you don’t properly care for your grin.
  • Limit dark-colored foods and beverages. Berries, red wine, tea, and coffee are some common ones to know. You can have them in moderation or rinse your mouth with water afterward.

If you do notice any tinting that’s bothering you, then you can head to your dentist! They may be able to repair or polish your restoration, helping it look the best it deserves to be. In some cases, a replacement can be what you need to feel confident in your smile once again.
