Man sleeping after his wisdom tooth removal

Getting your wisdom teeth removed can be exciting, but nerve-racking at the same time. You’ll get the relief you deserve or avoid any future complications, but your body will need time to heal afterward. A great way to support your recovery is by getting some rest. However, many find it a bit hard to sleep after their treatment. Here are three tips you can try when nighttime rolls around.

1.)  Elevate Your Head

When you lie down, it’s recommended to keep your head elevated. Doing this can help avoid blood from pooling at the extraction site, which leads to more swelling and bruising. By using an extra pillow, you can let gravity do its work and bring it back down. You might also try sleeping on your side in this position; it might be more comfortable than being on your back!

2.)  Prepare a Comfortable Environment Before Your Treatment

You should also set up the area you’ll be relaxing in after your treatment. Getting it primed for sleeping by blocking out any light or getting rid of distractions can help create a calm environment. Tidying up the space can also eliminate the worry about you tripping over rogue items.

Keep your favorite items nearby; that way, you don’t have to move around too much and start your journey toward feeling better. Many people enjoy a dark and cool area, which lets them snuggle up with their favorite blanket. You might also want to ask a trusted person to help you get settled in.

3.)  Take Over-the-Counter Medication

Right after your treatment, you likely won’t be in much discomfort. That’s because any local anesthesia you got is still in effect. Once it wears off, you may start to feel a bit sore. This is expected, but you can help manage it by taking prescribed medication or pain relievers. Be sure to take them as directed! Additionally, you can use a cold compress during the first day to minimize swelling and tenderness. Do this for 10-minute intervals as needed.

When Should You Reach Out to Your Dentist?

The days following your treatment, any discomfort you have should start to dissipate. However, if you notice it getting worse or persisting, then consider calling your dentist. Having them take a look can ensure your healing is going smoothly.

Once you get your wisdom teeth removed, follow these tips! They might be able to help you get the sleep you deserve and enjoy a problem-free smile. It’s just a short recovery until you’re back to your normal routine.
